How much should you spend on family photography?

When families in Hertfordshire start looking for a photographer, one of the first questions that comes up is usually about price. It's completely understandable. Whether you are in Welwyn Garden City, St Albans, or Hertford, you'll see a wide range of pricing, and it is not always obvious what the differences actually mean.
Over time, I have noticed that the real question people are asking is not just “how much does it cost?”, but “what am I actually getting for my money?” That distinction matters, because family photography is not a simple product with a fixed value. It is an experience, a process, and a set of images that only exist because you took the time to step into it.
What you are really paying for in family photography?
One of the most common misunderstandings I see is that people assume they are paying for the hour on the day. In reality, the session itself is only a small part of the work involved.
From my own experience working with families, a single session includes several stages that are not always visible to clients:
- Planning the session and thinking about location, timing, and light.
- Communication before the shoot so expectations are clear
- The photography session itself, anything from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the family and the chosen shoot.
- Culling through hundreds of images afterwards and selecting the very best ones
- Careful hand editing and colour work on the final gallery
- Preparing a set of images that feel like a cohesive and natural representation of your family.
By the time a gallery is delivered, many hours of work have gone into it beyond the time we spend together in person. This is why pricing can vary so much between photographers, even if the session length looks similar on paper.
My approach to family photography
My sessions are designed to be relaxed and natural, with an emphasis on storytelling. I work with families across Hertfordshire, often outdoors in seasonal locations or in their own homes, depending on what feels right for them.
The aim is not to create stiff or overly posed portraits. Instead, I focus on documenting real interaction and connection as it unfolds. Children do not need to sit still and behave perfectly. In fact, the best images usually come when they are free to move, explore, and simply be themselves.
No hidden costs and no paying extra for your memories
One thing I believe strongly in is simple, transparent pricing.
Every family session includes a full gallery of at least 20 beautifully edited images, often more, available to download at no additional cost.
Unfortunately, not all photography pricing works this way. Some photographers offer a lower session fee but then charge separately for individual digital images or collections afterwards. In some cases, families can end up spending double or even triple the original session price if they want access to their full gallery.
That approach has never felt right to me.
I spend hours carefully selecting and editing every image that makes it into a gallery. Each photograph has been chosen because it tells part of your story and contributes to the overall collection.
Once that work is done, I want families to have the complete experience, not feel forced to choose between favourite moments because of additional costs.

From my perspective, value in family photography comes from three things:
- The experience on the day
- The emotional connection in the images
- The longevity of what you receive afterwards
You are not just paying for photographs. You are investing in a record of your family at a specific point in time. Each of these moments are so fleeting, you almost don't notice how fast everything changes until you pause to reflect and look back. Photographs enable those precious memories to be kept into sharp focus, instead of fade into a blur.
As children grow, routines change, and life moves forward quickly, those moments become more significant than they felt at the time they were taken.
Common misconceptions about family photography sessions
One of the most common assumptions I come across is that a shorter session means fewer or simpler photos. In reality, the structure of the session is about allowing space for genuine moments rather than rushing through a checklist of poses.
Another misconception is that the photographer will “just take a few nice pictures.” In practice, especially with families or larger groups, the best images often come from allowing time for everyone to relax into the experience.
This is why session length can vary depending on the family and the number of people involved. A larger or extended family often needs more time to settle, interact naturally, and create a variety of meaningful combinations and moments.
What a typical session feels like
Most families are pleasantly surprised by how relaxed the experience feels. There is no pressure to perform or pose in a particular way.
Instead, I often encourage families to focus on each other rather than the camera.
In an outdoor session, this might mean walking, playing, exploring, or simply talking together while I document what unfolds. At home, it might involve everyday interactions that reflect your real life in a way that feels authentic and personal.
My goal is always the same: to create images that feel like your family, not like a version of you trying to behave for a photograph.
So how much should you spend on family photography?
There is no single correct answer to this question. What matters most is not the price itself, but whether the photographer’s approach aligns with what you want to remember.
