What Is the Best Age for Baby Photos?
It's one of the questions I am asked most often.
"When should we book our baby's photoshoot?"
Usually, what parents are really asking is whether they've missed something. They worry that if they didn't book a newborn session, they've missed the best opportunity. Or perhaps their baby is already six or nine months old and they're wondering if they've left it too late.
The truth is that after photographing babies across Hertfordshire, I don't believe there is one perfect age for baby photos.
In fact, I think the idea of a "best age" can sometimes stop parents from booking altogether.
Every stage of babyhood has its own beauty. Every stage disappears far more quickly than you expect. And every stage leaves behind details you'll one day struggle to remember without photographs.
So if you're searching for the best age for baby photos, my honest answer may not be the one you were expecting.
The Short Answer: There Isn't One Best Age
As a baby photographer, I'm often asked to reveal the secret. The magical age when babies smile on demand, sit perfectly still and cooperate beautifully throughout a photoshoot.
Unfortunately, no such age exists.
Newborns are wonderfully tiny but sometimes surprisingly determined to stay awake.
Three-month-olds reward their parents with smiles but are still discovering the world around them.
Six-month-olds are often full of character and curiosity.
Older babies may clap, crawl, giggle and attempt to escape in equal measure.
Every age brings something different.
The photographs I create aren't really about finding the perfect version of your baby. They're about preserving the version that exists right now. The little habits, the expressions, the details and the moments that feel ordinary today but will one day become precious memories.
Newborn Photography (5–21 Days): Tiny Toes, Scrunchy Cuddles and the Beginning of Everything
If you're considering newborn photography, you'll often hear that the first couple of weeks are ideal.
There is certainly something special about this stage.
Newborn babies are still wonderfully curled up from their time in the womb. They fit perfectly against a parent's chest, stretch dramatically after naps and spend much of their time sleeping, feeding and being cuddled.
Their tiny fingers and toes are enough to make any parent emotional. Sometimes they still have soft wisps of hair on their ears and shoulders. Their skin is wrinkly, their features are delicate and they are quite literally the smallest they will ever be.
These details disappear quickly.
That said, newborns don't always read the rule book.
One of my favourite newborn sessions involved a beautiful baby boy who spent most of the shoot wide awake, staring suspiciously at everyone around him with what can only be described as the expression of a grumpy retired headmaster.
His parents had imagined sleepy newborn photographs.
Instead, they received a gallery filled with personality.
And that, ultimately, is what matters.
Baby Photos at Three Months: The First Smiles
Around three months, babies begin to emerge from the sleepy haze of the newborn stage.
They start recognising familiar faces, holding their heads up with more confidence and responding to the people around them.
For many parents, this is when they begin to feel they're really getting to know their baby.
Photographs at this age often capture those first genuine smiles, curious expressions and moments of connection between parents and child. Babies are becoming stronger, more expressive and increasingly aware of the world around them.
They're also wonderfully cuddly, often sporting the sort of deliciously chubby arms and legs that seem impossible to resist.
Baby Photos at Six Months: Personality in Bloom
If there is one age that often surprises parents, it's around six months.
By this stage, many babies are rolling confidently, sitting with support and beginning to show a real sense of personality. They react to familiar voices, pull funny faces and are often fascinated by everything happening around them.
Some are beginning their journey with solid foods, which can be both entertaining and surprisingly photogenic.
Sessions at this age often feel relaxed because babies are alert and interactive, while still being content to stay close to their parents.
It's a lovely stage to document because so much change is happening in such a short space of time.
Baby Photos at Seven to Nine Months: Curious, Characterful and On the Move
By seven to nine months, many babies have realised they can influence the world around them.
This discovery tends to be accompanied by a great deal of enthusiasm.
There may be clapping, babbling, crawling, pulling up to stand and plenty of laughter.
There may also be determined attempts to head in the opposite direction of the camera.
This age is often wonderfully expressive. Babies are developing their own little personalities and opinions. They interact more with their surroundings and often delight in making their parents laugh.
The result is a gallery full of character.
Is It Too Late to Book Baby Photos?
Absolutely not.
This is another question I hear regularly.
Parents often worry they've missed an important milestone or failed to book at the "right" age. In my experience, there is no wrong age. I've never met a family who regretted having photographs taken. I have met plenty who wished they'd documented a particular stage before it disappeared. Whether your baby is a few days old, a few months old or approaching their first birthday, there is always something worth remembering.
Why I Photograph Babies at Home
One of the things that makes my approach slightly different is that I don't photograph babies in a studio.
I photograph them at home.
Partly because it's practical. Everything your baby might need is already there and nobody has to pack the contents of the nursery into the car.
But mostly because home tells a story.
Years from now, you'll notice things in your photographs that you barely paid attention to on the day.
The nursery you spent months preparing.
The armchair where endless feeds took place.
The favourite blanket gifted by a grandparent.
The family dog quietly keeping watch.
These details become part of your family's history.
Photographing babies at home allows me to capture not just what your baby looked like, but a little of what life felt like too.
Photographing Babies Across Hertfordshire
Whether I'm photographing a newborn snuggled up at home in Welwyn Garden City, documenting a smiley six-month-old in St Albans or chasing a determined crawler around a living room in Hertford, one thing remains the same.
No two babies are alike.
Every family has their own rhythm, their own story and their own version of these fleeting early years.
I also regularly photograph families throughout Harpenden, Wheathampstead, Hitchin and the surrounding areas, creating natural, baby-led photographs that reflect real family life rather than perfectly posed moments.
When Should You Book a Newborn Photoshoot?
If you're hoping for specifically for newborn photographs, I usually recommend getting in touch during your third trimester.
We'll pencil in a date roughly two weeks after your due date and adjust it once your baby decides to make their appearance. Babies, after all, are not widely known for their commitment to schedules. Booking before baby arrives helps ensure availability while still allowing plenty of flexibility.
Frequently Asked Questions About Baby Photography:
What is the best age for baby photos?
There isn't one best age. Every stage offers something different, from the tiny details of a newborn to the expressions and personality of an older baby.
Is six months a good age for baby photos?
Absolutely. Six months is often a wonderful stage because babies are becoming more interactive, expressive and curious about the world around them.
Is it too late to book baby photos at nine months?
Not at all. Nine-month-old babies are often full of character, movement and personality, making this a fantastic age to photograph.
Can baby photos be taken at home?
Yes. In fact, all of my newborn and baby sessions take place in clients' homes or outdoor locations. Home sessions are relaxed, personal and full of meaningful details.
What if my baby cries during the photoshoot?
Then we simply work around it. Babies cry, need feeding, need cuddles and sometimes need a change of scenery. Baby-led sessions allow plenty of time for all of these things and are never hurried. It takes as long as it takes. (I always allow up to 3 hours but usually it's more like 1.5-2.)
What should my baby wear for photographs?
I always provide guidance before your session. Generally speaking, simple, comfortable clothing works beautifully and keeps the focus on your baby rather than their outfit. Natural Textures always look ageless and simple bodysuits or vests will always be a winner.
The Best Age for Baby Photos Is Now
If a parent tells me they're waiting for the perfect age, I always tell them the same thing.
Your baby will never be as small as they are today.
That is true whether they are three days old, three months old or nearly a year old.
No matter what stage they're currently at, capturing their littleness is something you'll look back upon with enormous emotion and nostalgia.
The truth is that every stage feels ordinary while you're living it.
And every stage feels extraordinary once it's gone.
So what is the best age for baby photos?
The age they are now.
If you're looking for a baby photographer in Welwyn Garden City, St Albans, Hertford or the surrounding Hertfordshire area, I'd love to help you preserve this chapter of your family's story before it slips quietly into the next one.
